Man found dead in landing gear of American Airlines plane at Charlotte airport
Maintenance crews discovered the body shortly after inspecting the aircraft arriving from Europe

The body of a man was found in the landing gear of an American Airlines flight that arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Europe, according to police.
The stowaway was reportedly found in the landing gear compartment of an American Airlines plane Sunday morning, following a flight that had recently arrived at Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Europe.
Maintenance crews discovered the body shortly after 9 a.m. local time, and responding officers pronounced the individual deceased, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
“We are working with authorities on their investigation,” an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.
An airport spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the incident, adding, “We are deeply saddened by this news and will support the CMPD’s investigation as needed.”
This is at least the second time this year that stowaways have been found in landing gear at U.S. airports. In January, two stowaways were found dead in the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue jetliner at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
According to experts, clandestine travel on a commercial airliner almost always ends in death because of the dangers and extreme conditions a person is exposed to inside the wheel well.
Among the effects of traveling exposed for many hours to temperatures as low as minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit can be, in addition to loss of limbs, the total lack of oxygen at 35,000 feet or higher can result in brain death.
