On April 19, two agents linked to the United States Embassy and two officials from the State Investigative Agency (AEI) of the state of Chihuahua died in an accident, when they returned from an operation against a drug laboratory in the municipality of Morelos.

Federal authorities later confirmed that U.S. agents did not have accreditation to operate in Mexico, while US media reports, linking them to the CIA, increased the controversy.
Recently, Sheinbaum supported the FGR's investigation and assured that it is “very important to know if there was interference by foreign agents.”
