President Donald Trump has reached an agreement not to move forward with a $100 million lawsuit filed against Mary Trump, his only direct niece.
The New York tycoon accused his brother Fred's daughter of allying with The New York Times newspaper to leak confidential information about his tax and financial records, which was used as material for an investigation that ultimately won the Pulitzer Prize.
However, after negotiating, both parties announced an agreement aimed at concluding the lawsuit if some requirements demanded by the current president of the nation are met.
“The parties are pleased to report that they have reached an agreement and anticipate being able to stipulate the definitive dismissal of this lawsuit in the coming weeks, once certain preconditions have been met,” states a judicial document presented to the public.
The lawsuit was filed five years ago and included Mary Trump, The New York Times and three reporters from the news outlet: Susanne Craig, David Barstow and Russell Buettner.
Material about Trump's financial movements emerged from the publication of some of his tax returns.
Based on hard data, it was mentioned that, with the help of “dubious tax schemes,” the New Yorker allegedly earned at least $413 million derived from the real estate empire inherited by his father.
Annoyed at being exposed, Donald Trump accused his niece and the named reporters of conspiring to leak confidential documents driven by a feeling of personal revenge.
However, the scope and veracity of the information published was recognized with the 2019 Pulitzer Prize.
The following year, Mary Trump published a controversial book titled “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man.”
Subsequently, a judge not only dismissed the lawsuit filed by Donald Trump, but also ordered him to pay nearly $400,000 in legal costs related to the complaint.
So far, the details of the established agreement are unknown, but it was stipulated that the plaintiff will not be able to file new complaints in the future on the same issue.
