US military member dies after falling from a ship; This is the first casualty in operations in the Caribbean
The infantryman fell overboard on the night of February 7 while the ship was sailing in the Caribbean. Three days later, he was declared dead
A U.S. Marine, Corporal First Class Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, 21, was pronounced dead after falling overboard from the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima during operations in the Caribbean Sea, the Marine Corps reported Thursday. Oforah fell overboard on the night of February 7 while the ship was sailing in the Caribbean, according to officials from the II Marine Expeditionary Force. A 72-hour search and rescue operation involving five U.S. Navy ships, a rigid inflatable boat, and at least ten aircraft from the Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force failed to locate him alive. The soldier was officially declared dead on February 10. The search operation included MH-60 Sierra and MH-60 Romeo helicopters, P-8 Poseidon patrol aircraft, HC-130J planes, and MQ-9 Reaper drones, among other assets, according to the official statement. The exact circumstances of the incident are still under investigation.
Following the incident, Colonel Tom Trimble, commander of the 22nd MEU (SOC), said in a statement: “We mourn with the Oforah family. The loss of the corporal is deeply felt by the entire team and his dedication to service will not be forgotten.”
Context of Operations in the Caribbean
Oforah's death is the first publicly announced fatality linked to U.S. military operations in the Caribbean as part of “Operation Southern Spear,” a large-scale deployment of Navy and Marine Corps ships and units to combat maritime criminal networks and drug trafficking in the region, as well as to reinforce the U.S. military presence near Venezuela.
This operation, launched by the Trump administration, has also included the interception and destruction of vessels allegedly involved in drug smuggling and the imposition of a kind of naval quarantine in the area. The strong US naval presence in the Caribbean is part of multilateral operations focused on controlling illicit trafficking and regional stability, in a context that has generated both achievements and concerns about the safety of crews.
