After the ban on the export of wheat, now preparing to ban the Sugar Export
Due to the rising prices of sugar in India, the government is considering banning its Sugar Export. News channel Aaj Tak has claimed this in a report quoted by Reuters.
According to the report, to stop the rise in domestic prices, the government may impose restrictions on the export of sugar. Last week itself, the export of wheat was banned in view of domestic needs. If the export of sugar is not banned, then it is quite possible that this season the export of sugar may be limited.
It is being said in the report that this season the government can limit the export of sugar to 10 million tonnes. Let us tell you that India is at number one in the world in terms of production of sugar. However, in terms of its export, it comes second in the world. Brazil exports the most sugar.
If we look at the government data, we will find that till May 18, in the current marketing year ending in September, India has exported 7.5 million tonnes of sugar. In the year 2020-21, 70 lakh tonnes of sugar was exported. There has been a boom in the export of sugar in the last few years. India exported 6.2 lakh tonnes of sugar in the year 2017-18, while 38 lakh tonnes in the year 2018-19 and 59.60 lakh tonnes in the year 2019-20.
The biggest buyer countries of India's sugar include Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and African countries. Let us tell you that 80 percent of the sugar production in India is done in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Sugar is also produced in Bihar, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Punjab.
