JCPenney announces store closure and massive layoff of employees
The layoff will be of approximately 300 employees who will have the option to relocate
The United States department store chain, JCPenney recently announced the closure of several of its stores this year and with it the layoff of approximately 300 workers.
The retailer with headquarters in Plano, Texas detailed that the definitive closure of its stores, specifically the Alliance Supply Chain store in Haslet, Texas, will take place in mid-November this year.
However, the company emphasized that workers will have the option of relocating to other JCPenney facilities. A spokesperson for the retailer noted that “while this decision was difficult, it was necessary to build a stronger, more competitive company.”
Since last year, the retailer has been closing several of its locations due to their underperformance and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the process.
“We appreciate the contributions of all impacted associates, who were previously notified of our decision, and we are committed to supporting them with transition resources, including severance pay and benefits,” the spokesperson said.
This closure represents one of the most significant for the retailer since the Alliance Supply Chain facility was one of the chain’s main distribution centers.
