Tomato Prices Set to Fall in Delhi and Other Parts of India
Tomato prices in India, especially in Delhi, are set to fall as new supplies from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka arrive, following a recent spike due to supply disruptions caused by rain.
Tomato prices are expected to decrease across India, including in the capital city of Delhi. Recently, due to supply disruptions caused by heavy rains, the prices of tomatoes had skyrocketed, making this essential vegetable scarce in many households. Reports indicate that a consignment of tomatoes from the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is about to reach Delhi. The government is optimistic that as these shipments arrive, tomato prices will start to fall in Delhi and other regions of the country.
Tomato Prices Reach Rs 75 per kg in Delhi
According to government data, the retail price of tomatoes in Delhi has reached Rs 75 per kilogram. A government official stated on Saturday that prices are expected to soften in the coming weeks due to the increased supply from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The official noted that the prices of both tomatoes and onions, which have surged due to supply constraints, are anticipated to stabilize soon.
Reasons for the Increase in Tomato Prices
A report by the news agency PTI cited an official from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, explaining that the prices of tomatoes, potatoes, and onions have surged in Delhi and other cities. The supply of these key vegetables has been impacted by extreme heat followed by heavy rains, leading to higher retail prices. The official mentioned that while the price of tomatoes in Delhi has reached Rs 75 per kilogram, it could decrease if the supply chain is not further disrupted by heavy rains.
Current Tomato Supply to Delhi
According to ministry data, the retail price of tomatoes in Delhi on July 12 was Rs 75 per kilogram, compared to Rs 150 per kilogram during the same period last year. The all-India average retail price of tomatoes was Rs 65.21 per kilogram on July 12, while it was Rs 53.36 per kilogram last year. Presently, tomatoes are being supplied to Delhi from Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Incoming Supplies from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
The ministry official mentioned that prices are expected to decrease as soon as hybrid tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reach Delhi. The government is not planning to reintroduce the sale of subsidized tomatoes, a measure that was implemented last year when prices exceeded Rs 110 per kilogram. The official expressed confidence that prices will return to normal within one to two weeks as the supply from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka improves.
Looking Ahead
The expected arrival of tomato consignments from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is set to alleviate the current high prices, bringing relief to consumers in Delhi and other parts of India. The government’s proactive measures and the upcoming supply boost underscore the efforts to stabilize the market and ensure essential commodities are accessible to the public.
