Talking about a penny being worth more than a house seems exaggerated. However, in 2025 something historic happened with the smallest coin in the United States. The so-called Omega penny not only marked the end of an era, but also surprised the numismatic market by reaching extraordinary prices for a modern penny. For more than two centuries, the penny was a part of everyday American life. Since 1793, the Mint had continuously produced these coins. Everything changed in 2025, when the federal government announced it would stop making them for circulation. The reason was economic. Each penny cost almost four cents to produce. To mark this symbolic closure, the Mint created a special edition. The last pennies of 2025 incorporated a small omega symbol (Ω). This symbol represented the end of regular penny production, being the “last letter” of the Greek alphabet. How many Omega pennies exist? The issue was extremely limited. Only 696 Omega pennies were produced in total. These were divided into three identical groups of 232 coins each.
The number was not arbitrary. It represents the 232 years during which the United States minted pennies, from 1793 to 2025.

The last coins minted were certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). They were later offered in a special set of three coins. This set was auctioned by Stack's Bowers Galleries on December 11, 2025.
“The final set of three Omega cents sold for a record price of $800,000,” notes Stack's Bowers Galleries.
This result made the set one of the most valuable modern numismatic items ever sold.
Because the sale was conducted as a set,The individual value of the gold penny was not precisely defined. Specialists estimate that it could be between $250,000 and $350,000, or even more if offered separately. The final versions of copper-plated zinc could also reach similar figures, as their value lies in their historical significance and not in the material. What about the other Omega pennies? The other Omega sets also reached high prices. Some sold for as little as $48,000, while most fetched between $50,000 and $200,000. This suggests that each individual Omega penny can be worth between $15,000 and $20,000, depending on its condition and position within the mintage series. Are these Omega pennies required to complete a Lincoln collection? Technically, these pennies are considered regular issues, even though they never circulated. This has generated debate among Lincoln penny collectors. With only 232 pieces of each type, these pennies are much rarer than the famous 1909-S VDB, which had a mintage of 484,000. In practice, only 232 people in the world will be able to own a complete Lincoln collection with all three Omega versions. For most, it's acceptable to consider a collection complete without them.

Although there's talk of the “last penny,” the Mint didn't officially retire this denomination. In 2026, pennies were produced for commemorative sets for the country's 250th anniversary.
This means the penny could return someday, if the Treasury deems it necessary.
