The recall, which affects models produced between 2016 and 2021, seeks to prevent defects that could compromise vehicle safety. Although the company confirmed that no accidents or injuries related to this defect have been reported, the measure was taken as a precaution.
What was found in the affected Honda Civics
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the lug nuts that secure the wheels of some Civics can deform over time, especially on vehicles that use aftermarket aluminum wheels.
The problem lies in the fact that the lug nut or bolt seat may not be the correct size or shape, which with continued use can cause it to loosen. If this occurs, there is a risk that the wheel could come off, creating a hazard for both the driver and other vehicles on the road.
Although the chances of an incident occurring are low, Honda decided to conduct a thorough review of all potentially affected models. In total, it is estimated that 406,290 vehicles will need to go to official dealerships to verify that the parts meet safety standards.
What will Honda do with the inspected vehicles?
The procedure will be free for owners. Honda technicians will inspect the wheel bolts and nuts to determine if they meet the appropriate specifications. If an anomaly is detected, Defective parts and even entire wheels will be replaced if necessary. The brand noted that the recall campaign will begin on December 9, by which time dealerships will be ready to receive the vehicles.Owners of a Honda Civic manufactured between 2016 and 2021 can check the status of their vehicle by entering the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the NHTSA website or directly on the Honda website. A problem detected early: Honda explained that the fault was detected during internal quality inspections and confirmed that the number of vehicles with the current defect is small. However, faced with the impossibility of immediately identifying the exact units, Honda opted to extend the recall to all models from the affected period to ensure the safety of its customers. According to a statement from the brand, “a very small number of vehicles require wheel replacement,” but the company considers it essential to act preventively. The decision is part of the transparency and safety policy that characterizes the Japanese firm, which has maintained constant communication with the NHTSA to ensure that the process is carried out as quickly as possible. What could happen if the recall is ignored? While no incidents have been reported, Honda warns that ignoring the recall could lead to a potential risk. If a lug nut or bolt loosens while driving, the wheel could shift or come off, which could cause loss of vehicle control. Furthermore, a lug nut that comes loose from the car while driving can become a dangerous projectile for other drivers or pedestrians. Although the possibility of this happening is low, Honda emphasizes the importance of getting your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
How do you know if your Honda Civic is affected?
Owners can check if their vehicle is part of the recall by visiting the official NHTSA website (www.nhtsa.gov/recalls) and entering their vehicle's VIN. It will show whether the Civic is included in this or other pending recall campaigns.
Honda also offers direct customer service channels at its dealerships, where drivers can schedule a free inspection appointment and receive technical assistance if they need parts replacement.
