Trump will ask Congress to make E15 gasoline permanent: this is how it would benefit you
The Trump administration wants E15 gasoline to be sold year-round. We explain how this measure could help you save money when refueling.
Drivers in the United States could have year-round access to a fuel alternative that typically costs less than traditional gasoline. President Donald Trump's administration is preparing a proposal so that E15 gasoline can be sold permanently at gas stations, a measure that seeks to offer a cheaper option for millions of motorists amid pressure on energy prices.
According to information revealed to CBS News by a US official familiar with the matter, the White House plans to ask Congress for the necessary authorization to allow the marketing of E15 gasoline during the 12 months of the year. Currently, this fuel can only be sold temporarily through exemptions granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Although currently the average price of gasoline has fallen and is at an average of $3.92 per gallon, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the measure seeks to keep prices stable and reduce them for the remainder of the year.
E15 gasoline is a mixture composed of 15% ethanol and 85% conventional gasoline. In contrast, the most common blend sold in the United States contains only 10% ethanol and can be sold without seasonal restrictions.
The limitations on E15 were set by environmental factors. During warmer months, this fuel can evaporate more quickly due to its additional ethanol content, a situation that can contribute to the formation of smog and other air pollutants. Therefore, federal regulations often require the use of more expensive mixtures during certain times of the year.
The new initiative represents one of the Trump administration's latest efforts to contain the impact of rising gasoline prices. The energy market has faced volatility in recent weeks due to tensions derived from the conflict between Israel and Iran, a situation that has generated concern among consumers and authorities.
In addition to the potential savings for drivers, the proposal has the support of legislators from agricultural and corn-producing states, who believe that increased demand for ethanol could boost economic activity in rural communities and strengthen the American agricultural industry.
One of the main arguments in favor of the measure is its potential impact on consumers' pockets. According to data from the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA), E15 typically sells for about 25 cents per gallon below the price of regular gasoline.
For its part, the White House has indicated that the permanent availability of this fuel could translate into important economic benefits for Americans. According to official estimates, the widespread use of E15 would have the potential to generate savings of more than $20 billion per year in fuel costs.
The Trump administration had already taken steps in this direction during 2026. In March, it authorized emergency waivers that allowed refineries and gas stations to sell E15 gasoline before and during the summer driving season, a time when fuel demand traditionally increases in the country.
For now, the proposal will have to go through the legislative process in Congress, where it is not yet clear if it will have enough support to become law.
