Delhi Schools Implement Heat Wave Guidelines to Protect Students
Learn about the heat wave guidelines implemented by Delhi schools to safeguard students health. Discover preventive measures for parents to protect children from heat-related illnesses during the scorching summer months.
The Directorate of Education in Delhi has taken proactive measures to safeguard students from the scorching heat wave sweeping across North India. In response to the India Meteorological Department's warning of “above normal maximum temperatures” in May, the Directorate has issued comprehensive guidelines for all schools in the national capital.
Outlined below are the key directives:
- Schools are advised to refrain from organizing assemblies in the afternoon to prevent students from heatstroke.
- During declared heat waves, classes should not be conducted outdoors, and students should not be kept outside for any activities.
- Access to RO water systems and clean drinking water must be ensured for all students.
- Students should be given regular breaks to hydrate themselves between classes.
- School management committees are tasked with informing parents about the heat wave situation.
Additionally, schools are instructed to promptly report any heat-related health issues to the nearest health facility. First aid kits and oral rehydration solutions (ORS) should be readily available to address any student discomfort caused by the heat.
Parents are also urged to take preventive measures to protect their children:
- Provide ample fluids such as water, ORS, buttermilk, fresh fruit juice, and lemonade to keep children hydrated.
- Discourage the consumption of carbonated and sugary drinks.
- Ensure children cover themselves with sunglasses, caps, scarves, etc., when outdoors to shield from the sun.
- Opt for loose, comfortable clothing instead of tight attire during the summer months.
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and if necessary, use an umbrella for shade.
- Incorporate seasonal fruits into their diet for added hydration and nutrition.
Failure to remain hydrated and protected from the sun's rays can lead to various heat-related ailments, including heat stiffness, headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting, and heatstroke. Symptoms such as rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat, excessive thirst, decreased urination, and muscle cramps may also manifest with prolonged exposure to high temperatures and inadequate hydration.
