Today, the Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of the historic Nalanda University in Rajgir. Nalanda University had a glorious history and was known as a center of knowledge. People from not only India but also from many countries around the world studied here. Around 1200 AD, this university was destroyed.
In March 2006, during a visit to Bihar, the then President, the late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, spoke about re-establishing Nalanda University. From that time, we began the initiative to re-establish the Nalanda International University.
In 2010, upon our request, a bill was passed in the Lok Sabha for this purpose. The state government acquired 455 acres of land and handed it over to the central government. In 2014, Shri Narendra Modi's government was formed in the country, and the work of Nalanda University progressed rapidly. In 2016, the then President, the late Pranab Mukherjee, laid the foundation stone.
It is extremely satisfying that today Nalanda University is fully operational. The state government will provide all possible assistance in its expansion.
