4-year-old twins in critical condition after shooting themselves in Florida: parents arrested
The four-year-old twins are in critical but stable condition. Police are investigating how they accessed the gun inside the home.
The parents of two four-year-old twins were arrested in Florida after the children were injured by accidental gunfire inside their home, the Orange County Sheriff's Office reported.
According to authorities, officers initially responded to AdventHealth East Orlando Hospital after receiving a report of two children with gunshot wounds who had been transported by their own parents.
Subsequently, both minors were taken to Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition, Fox News Digital reported.
Parents of injured children arrested
The mother, Keishara Goodrum, 39, was arrested on two counts of child neglect with serious bodily injury, while the father, Maurice Bright, 40, faces one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
According to the arrest In an affidavit, the parents claimed they did not witness the moment of the shooting, although both heard a loud “bang” coming from inside the house. Goodrum told officers she was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for her five children, while Bright was cooking in the backyard. He added that he had been drinking alcohol the night before and may have forgotten to lock the gun after leaving it under a sofa cushion, which would have allowed the children access to it. The Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident and reiterated the importance of keeping firearms out of the reach of children, in compliance with state home safety laws. The parents remain in custody while formal charges against them are evaluated.
