A skull and human remains found among bushes on Coney Island
New York police investigate the discovery of a skull and multiple human bones near the famous Coney Island boardwalk
A human skull and other remains were found this week in the undergrowth on Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York, local authorities confirmed.
The first discovery occurred shortly before 6:00 pm on Tuesday, when officers found a skull near the Riegelmann Boardwalk, between W. 32nd and W. 33rd Streets, ABC 7 reported.
New remains located during the investigation
Following the initial discovery, units from the New York Police Department expanded the search in the area and on Wednesday afternoon located more human remains.
Officers extracted arms, legs, and other bones from the vegetation, which investigators say had been exposed to the elements for a considerable time.
However, several body parts remain missing.
The medical examiner is working to identify the person and determine the cause of death, although no official details about the case have been released so far.
Neighbors alarmed by the discovery
The discovery has generated concern among residents and visitors of the iconic tourist destination. One neighbor who spoke with Fox News Digital described the scene as “creepy” and “disturbing.” Another resident added: “It's crazy, I hope it never happens again.”
Authorities continue to inspect the area and collect evidence.
For now, no hypotheses have been put forward about what happened, and the police are actively investigating the area.
