El Chapo Guzmán would have circumvented US prison filters to send messages to his children
According to a report from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel used his lawyers to send messages to Los Chapitos.
Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán would have managed to maintain communication with his children and operators of the Sinaloa Cartel despite being incarcerated under strict isolation measures in the federal prison ADX Florence, considered the highest security prison in the United States.
According to a report from the US Federal Bureau of Prisons, cited by international media, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel used his ab ogados to send messages directed to their children, known as “Los Chapitos”, among them Iván Archivaldo, Jesús Alfredo, Ovidio and Joaquín Guzmán López.
The U.S. authorities note that the communications included references to threats against informants, as well as instructions related to criminal activities, including drug trafficking, money laundering and human trafficking.
According to the information disseminated by the El País newspaper, Guzmán Loera managed to violate the restrictions imposed under the program known as SAM (Spe cial Administrative Measures), designed to prevent prisoners considered high risk from maintaining contact with external criminal organizations.
The report also links these communications with the internal dispute that the Sinaloa Cartel faces between the “Los Chapitos” faction and the rel group associated with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, conflict that intensified after the capture and subsequent handover of the Sinaloan capo to US authorities.
“El Chapo” remains incarcerated since 2019 in ADX Florence, Colorado, where he is serving a life sentence for crimes related to drug trafficking and organized crime.
On different occasions, his defense has denounced extreme conditions of isolation and alleged violations of his human rights; however, US authorities have refused to modify their penitentiary regime by considering a security risk.
