Hispanic accused of killing his ex-wife and her new husband in Las Vegas supermarket
The suspect was facing a dispute over the custody of his children and alleged late support payments
A man from Las Vegas, Nevada, was charged with double murder after he allegedly entered a supermarket armed and shot killed his ex-wife and her new husband while they were working.
The police identified the suspect as Alejandro Estrada, 43 years old, who broke into a Smith's Grocery store on Tuesday and opened fire almost immediately on the couple, according to New York Post.
The victims, Amanda Rosas and Victor Frias Rosas, died at the scene of the events, according to the authorities.
Suspect was held by supermarket customers
After the shooting, several customers who were inside the store managed to knock down and hold the suspect until the arrival of the police.
Witnesses described a scene of chaos and terror within the establishment.
“He was completely calm. Without expression. Nothing”, the buyer Paula Milton to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “You could tell it was him because everyone was running and screaming, while he acted as if nothing had happened.”
Police indicate that Estrada was carrying multiple weapons at the time of the attack and now faces 12 criminal charges, including two counts of murder.
There was a dispute over custody and child support
According to reports cited by the New York Post, Amanda Rosas had married Victor Frias Rosas last year. However, rgo, was still involved in a conflictive judicial process with Estrada for the custody of her two children, 12 and 9 years old.
Additionally, the defendant owed more than $2,800 in child support payments.
The authorities have not confirmed whether the family conflict was the direct reason for the attack, although the investigation points to previous tensions between the parties.
The double murder occurs a few days after another criminal case that shocked the city, when a high school student was arrested for the alleged murder of a homeless woman.
Police identified the suspect as Dennis Geiggar, a young man with a history of conduct and anger management issues.
The victim, Marceline Biasini, 61 years old, was found seriously injured on a sidewalk last April 21 and subsequently died.
According to police records cited by local media, surveillance cameras captured the suspect approaching the place where the woman was shortly before screams and dozens of hits were heard.
Authorities noted that the teen had recently been expelled from a high school after an alleged attempt to start a fire on campus.
