Nurse killed in Illinois was bound, beaten and strangled by her ex-boyfriend for more than 7 hours
Illinois authorities revealed new details about the murder of Katherine Torbick, a 43-year-old nurse found dead in her Schaumburg home
An audio recording lasting more than seven hours became one of the key pieces of evidence in the case of the murder of a nurse in the suburbs of Chicago, a crime that has shocked the community of Schaumburg, Illinois.
Katherine Torbick, 43 years old, was found dead on April 20 inside her home, after police responded to a verification request wellness ion. At the location, the agents also located her ex-boyfriend, Kevin Motykie, 56 years old, in the residence's garage, according to ABC 7.
According to prosecutors, Motykie had with him a recording device that contained approximately seven hours of audio in which the attack on the woman was allegedly recorded.
Prosecutors describe hours of violence and threats
According to research, recording began around 2:00 a.m. and ended shortly after 9:00 a.m. authorities claim that in the audio Torbick is heard begging for help while she was handcuffed, beaten,and sexually assaulted.
Prosecutors noted that the couple had been in a relationship for a decade but had separated in January. During the alleged attack, Motykie repeatedly accused Torbick of being unfaithful.
The investigation maintains that the man used duct tape to immobilize the victim and threatened her several times to kill her. The Prosecutors further indicated that he strangled her on multiple occasions before the final episode that ended with the nurse's death.
After the alleged murder, Motykie mentioned on the recording that he planned to commit suicide.
There was a history of domestic violence
Authorities reported that Motykie was already facing an arrest warrant related to a previous case of domestic violence that occurred in March.
In that incident, according to prosecutors, the defendant had tried to strangle Torbick and attacked her with a knife inside d e the same home. The woman managed to escape and take refuge in a neighbor's house before being transferred to a hospital.
Although there was an active arrest warrant, the police had not managed to locate the suspect before the crime that occurred on April 20th.
Judicial records cited by local media also indicate that Motykie faced multiple complaints and protection orders for alleged acts of violence against former partners and relatives.
Community grieves the death of Katherine Torbick
Friends and coworkers described Torbick as a dedicated professional and a person committed to caring for others.
Julie Bevel, the victim's supervisor at Fox River MedSpa, said that the nurse was a appreciated figure within the medical team.
“He brought warmth, energy and genuine care to our workplace,” expressed Bevel after the news.
Torbick was a mother of a son and worked as a gastroenterology nurse.
Accused remains detained without right to bail
Kevin Motykie faces first-degree murder charges and appeared in court on May 8, where a judge ordered that he be detained without bail.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the case while reviewing audio material and the defendant's judicial history.
