One dead and one critically injured after shooting at Delaware hospital; suspect was arrested
A 19-year-old man died and another remains hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting inside a hospital in Wilmington, Delaware
A shooting that occurred inside a hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, left one young man dead and another seriously injured, in an event that led to the temporary closure of the medical center and extensive police deployment.
The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. m. Tuesday inside Wilmington Hospital, according to Wilmington Police.
Authorities located two victims with gunshot wounds inside the facility.
They later confirmed that one of the young men, both 19 years old, died as a result of the injuries suffered.
The second victim remains hospitalized in critical, although stable condition, according to the official report released on Wednesday.
Authorities indicated that the name of the deceased will be released later.
Suspect arrested in Philadelphia and will face serious charges
Police reported that the alleged perpetrator was identified as John Wallace-Bey, 23 years old.
Hours after the attack, officers detained him in Philadelphia, about 40 miles northeast of Wilmington.
The authorities indicated that they remain awaiting the extradition process to Delaware.
According to the police report, he will face charges that include first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon.
According to investigators and officials cited during the case update, the incident is preliminarily considered a targeted and isolated event.
Authorities also indicated that the investigation indicates that it was strictly an episode related to the work environment.
Hospital was confined while agents searched the building
After the shooting, the hospital activated a confinement while police teams carried out a review of the facilities.
Authorities later reported that the restriction was lifted.
The hospital system that operates the medical center confirmed that it worked together with authorities to ensure the safety of patients, visitors and staff.
During a press conference, Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos condemned the use of armed violence and stated that no circumstances justify this type of act.
For his part, Wilmington Mayor John Carney expressed support for the hospital workers and highlighted the performance of the emergency teams.
Delaware Governor Matt Meyer also condemned the incident and noted that the case shows the impact that gun violence can have even in spaces dedicated to health care.
The authorities clarified that the investigation remains open and that new details will be disclosed as the process progresses.
