Police officer murdered in hospital lobby in North Carolina
Roger Smith, 59, was shot while on duty in the WakeMed Garner Healthplex emergency department
A police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning inside the lobby of the WakeMed Garner Healthplex emergency department in Garner, a town near Raleigh, North Carolina.
The victim was identified as Roger Smith, 59, an officer with the WakeMed campus police department, who was on duty security duties when he was attacked around 9:00 a.m., according to Garner Police.
The suspect, Benji Martin Jr., 29, a Garner resident, was arrested and charged with murder, authorities said.
“His actions prevented further loss of life”
According to police, hospital medical staff described Officer Smith as “a hero whose actions likely prevented further loss of life.”
“Officer Smith dedicated his career to protecting others, and even in his final moments, he put the safety of others above his own,” Garner Police Chief Chris Adams said in a statement.
“Our condolences go out to the Smith family, the WakeMed Campus Police Department, and all the hospital staff,” he added.
Reactions from the Governor of North Carolina
Governor Josh Stein lamented the incident and highlighted the sacrifice of officer.
“Law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe, and we will always be grateful for Officer Smith’s sacrifice,” X wrote on social media. “Please pray for his family and the entire WakeMed community during this difficult time.”
Investigation ongoing
The hospital lobby was closed following the shooting as local and state investigators collected evidence at the scene.
WakeMed reported that its officers are sworn officers and receive the same police training required by state law. The hospital system’s police force patrols six medical facilities in the Raleigh area.
The city of Garner, with about 31,000 residents,It remains under heavy police presence as the investigation into the homicide of Officer Smith continues.
