Texas Governor to request reimbursement of the millions invested in his anti-immigrant plan
Greg Abbott wants $11.1 billion dollars spent to prevent immigrants from entering the United States to be returned from Washington.
Greg Abbott, governor of Texas, wants the federal government to reimburse him for the millions of dollars invested in his plan to prevent immigrants from entering the United States during the administration led by Joe Biden.
During an interview with the NewsNation television network, the Republican who went so far as to allocate hundreds of thousands of dollars to set up a long chain of buoys with blades in the middle of the Rio Grande with the aim of hindering access to US territory, assures that the government headed by Donald Trump will allow him to access a refund of everything invested to close the path to people who lack the resources to process a visa or be among the candidates considered for refuge.
“The Trump administration has opened the door for us to be able to request reimbursement for the expenses we incurred, and we are requesting reimbursement, at this very moment, of billions of dollars in costs that Texas incurred to secure the border and due to the failure of the Biden administration to fulfill its duty,” he stressed.
Since before the New York magnate managed to guarantee his return to the White House, the Texan president had been characterized by exercising a heavy hand in the use of strategies focused on curbing the number of immigrants in the United States.
In the final stretch of the previous federal administration, it was common for caravans with hundreds of people determined to escape poverty in their country to travel through Central America with the desire to reach the border between Mexico and the United States, where they await the neglect of the border patrol to enter United States territory with the mission of making it their final destination.
When the immigrants achieved this goal, to prevent them from staying in Texas, Governor Abbott used tens of millions of dollars to hire buses and offered to transport them for free to states governed by Democrats.
Thus, in a matter of weeks, cities like Los Angeles and New York were filled with foreigners lacking legal status, a situation that forced their authorities to allocate tens of millions of dollars to pay for shelter, food, health services and even temporary work permits.
Upset with the Texan president, the Democrats reproached him for his actions and even tried to sue transportation companies, including one that carried out charter trips full of immigrants.
“President Biden's policies left Texas and the rest of the United States defenseless against an unprecedented infiltration of violent criminals, known terrorists and other hostile foreign actors, such as the dangerous Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua,” he detailed at the start of the year when requesting a refund estimated at $11.1 billion.
With Trump coming to power for the second time, the border was reinforced with the support of the National Guard and for Abbott it was no longer necessary to spend more money than he is now demanding to be returned.
