Texas teacher caught having sex with a student in his classroom
A Texas high school teacher and coach released on bail after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a student
A Texas high school teacher and sports coach has regained his freedom after spending several days in custody on allegations related to an alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
The accused was identified as Chad Allen Rodriguez, 38, a physics and astronomy teacher and coach at John Jay High School in San Antonio, the Daily Mail reported.
Authorities reported that the teacher was released on Tuesday on $50,000 bail, after being held for four days at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center.
The case involves an alleged relationship with a 17-year-old student
Chad Allen Rodriguez was arrested Saturday off the school campus and charged with having an inappropriate relationship with a student, which is considered a second-degree felony under Texas law.
According to court documents, the teacher began flirting with the student in October of last year.
The investigation maintains that the relationship evolved during the school year to include multiple sexual encounters and the exchange of explicit photographs and videos via cell phones.
The case came to light after another student allegedly observed the two inside a classroom on May 14 and reported the situation to school staff.
Surveillance footage from John Jay High School showed the student entering the teacher's classroom alone and remaining there for approximately ten minutes, according to the arrest record.
After receiving the complaint, the police began an investigation that led to the teacher's arrest on May 16.
The authorities indicated that the teacher had worked at the school since 2016 and had a salary close to $70,000 annually.
School district suspended teacher
Northside Independent School District spokesperson Barry Perez confirmed that Chad Allen Rodriguez was immediately placed on administrative leave.
“Our priority remains the safety and well-being of students,” the district said in a statement.
The school system also stated that it will continue to collaborate with authorities as the investigation unfolds.
The San Antonio Police Department reported that the case remains open and asked anyone who believes they have been a victim to contact the Special Victims Unit.
The accusations have generated a strong reaction in community forums in San Antonio, where numerous users questioned the alleged abuse of authority by an educator over a student.
Under the Texas Penal Code, an inappropriate relationship between an educator and a student constitutes a felony regardless of whether the student gave consent, due to the position of power the teacher occupies.
