The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has assumed the investigation and said the shootings are not believed to be related at this time.
South Carolina State University in Orangeburg was placed on lockdown Saturday night following two separate shootings on its campus that left a student dead and a man injured.
University police reported the first of the shootings occurred at Hugine Suites, a student housing complex, where a woman was shot and killed. His identity has not been released pending an autopsy and notification of his next of kin.
In a second incident, also on campus, a man was shot and wounded and taken to a hospital. His name and condition have not been released.
Authorities rule out link between shootings
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has assumed the investigation and said the shootings are not believed to be related at this time. As of Sunday, no arrests had been announced and no details about suspects had been released.
Authorities asked anyone with information to contact SLED investigators.
Following the shootings, the university activated a temporary lockdown of the campus. Students at Hugine Suites were instructed to remain in their rooms, while others were asked to stay away from the area or leave campus.
The homecoming concert scheduled for that evening was canceled.
Senator Tim Scott said in a statement on X: “My office is closely monitoring the situation at South Carolina State University. We pray for the safety of everyone on campus.”
The university, located in Orangeburg, has an enrollment of approximately 2,900 students.
