“Backrooms” becomes the highest-grossing film in A24's history in the US.
After grossing more than $100 million at the box office, the film dethroned "Marty Supreme" as the independent label's highest-grossing film in the US.
Just days after its premiere, the film “Backrooms” has received great acceptance from the American public. This warm reception has been translated into high demand at the box office, crowning it as the highest-grossing production in the history of the independent label A24 in the US.
According to information released by the production company, the film directed by Kane Parsons reached $100 million dollars at the domestic box office in just six days. With this figure, he managed to surpass the domestic record that “Marty Supreme” established in the studio with $96 million dollars during the same period.
Despite this great reach in the American market, globally the production is in second position in popularity with respect to Timothée Chalamet's film with a total of $144 million dollars raised.
However, “Backrooms” is expected to soon follow the $191 million that “Marty Supreme” earned worldwide during its theatrical season, which still holds it as the highest-grossing international title on independent label A24.
The news represents a great achievement for the producer of stories like “Eddington” and “Materialists”, since the “Backrooms” project was co-financed with Chernin Entertainment for approximately 10 million dollars.
What is the A24 film “Backrooms” about?
The film “Backrooms” was directed by Kane Parsons, author of a web series under the same name published on YouTube about liminal spaces, that is, seemingly endless rooms and structures that became popular among the suspense and horror-loving community.
Its reach on social media was so great that A24 decided to give the concept a chance and create a story that follows a furniture store owner, played by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor. The subject discovers a secret door that leads him to a succession of anonymous rooms.
After his disappearance, his therapist (played by actress Renate Reinsve) enters that unknown world to rescue him, facing a threat that hides in these spaces.
This plot captivated the public to such an extent that, in its opening weekend, it grossed $81 million in the domestic market and $118 million globally, Variety reported. With these figures, it established the best start on record for an original horror film.
