“Toy Story 5” surpasses $800 million and aims for the top of the franchise

The most beloved toy saga in cinema continues to demonstrate that its magic has no expiration date. “Toy Story 5” reached a new milestone at the box office by exceeding $800 million in global sales, consolidating itself as one of the biggest film hits of the year, according to Box Mojo Office.
After just three weekends in theaters, Pixar's fifth installment generated $381 million in the United States and $427.3 million in international markets, raising its worldwide total to an impressive $808.6 million.
With this rate of growth, production is set to exceed $1,000 million and surpass the mark of “Toy Story 4”, which in 2019 obtained $1,070 million and is currently the highest-grossing film in the Disney and Pixar franchise.
It currently occupies third place among the highest-grossing Hollywood releases of the year, only behind The “Super Mario Galaxy” movie ($1,009 million) and the biopic “Michael” ($991 million). Since both productions are already in the final stage of their theatrical release, “Toy Story 5” is expected to surpass them in the coming weeks.
A premiere for history
The film hit theaters in mid-June and debuted with $160 million during its opening weekend in the United States, setting a new record for the saga. This figure far surpassed the premiere of “Toy Story 4,” which had earned $120 million in 2019.
Internationally, the success was equally overwhelming, with $152 million at the box office during the first weekend, reaching a worldwide gross of $312 million in its first days. This performance also represented the second-best debut for an animated film in history, behind only “Incredibles 2,” which grossed $182.7 million upon its release.
The fifth film in the saga has been the most expensive in the franchise, with an estimated budget of $250 million dollars. However, it has already raised its investment solely from ticket sales.
The original voice cast returns led by Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) and Joan Cusack (Jessie), maintaining the essence that has conquered several generations.
Reviews have been very favorable and audiences gave Toy Story 5 an “A” CinemaScore, suggesting it should stay in theaters for weeks and continue its unstoppable rise at the global box office.
