I was there for everything: Matt Damon talks about supporting Ben Affleck through divorces and troubles
During a recent interview on the Howard Stern show, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck talked about their friendship
In a world where Hollywood friendships tend to be as fleeting as headlines, the connection between Matt Damon and Ben Affleck seems to be unique. During a recent interview on Howard Stern's Sirius XM show, the Oscar-winning actors and filmmakers for 'Good Will Hunting' opened up about a relationship that has survived decades, fame, and personal challenges. The conversation turned emotional when Stern asked Damon about how he supported Affleck through difficult times, including his 2015 divorce from Jennifer Garner and his public battles with alcohol. “Yeah, our relationship isn't affected by what people say,” said Damon, 55. “I was there for him every step of the way.” Affleck, 53, responded with heartfelt thanks: "That means a lot to me. That's, in a way, what a true friend is." Solid Foundation Before Fame The two reflected on how their friendship, forged in Boston long before success, provided them with a solid foundation to navigate the turbulent waters of fame. “Your evolution is kind of slowed down the moment you become famous because the world treats you differently,” Damon commented. Fortunately, they were both around 25 and 27 years old when they achieved notoriety, so they had already enjoyed years of anonymity. Affleck agreed that having “made it to the right place from the start” was crucial. "That's partly why we're so healthy; to what extent, you can judge! But by becoming famous and successful together, we had someone to fall back on." In a promotional video for their latest collaboration, The Rip (coming to Netflix on January 16), the actors shared the origin of their bond: a shared obsession with film since childhood. “We were both obsessed with making movies and acting from a young age, which definitely connected us,” Damon said. “But it's kind of strange in retrospect, because we came from a city where that wasn't common.” Affleck added: “The shared interest, like finding work you love and then doing it with your friends, is really nice, because you spend so much time at work.”
A Friendship That Transcends the Screen
The relationship between Damon and Affleck goes far beyond film sets and red carpets. It's a mutual support that has withstood very public tests, including Affleck's divorce from Jennifer Garner, his treatment for alcohol addiction in 2017, and his subsequent marriage to and separation from Jennifer Lopez between 2022 and 2025.
As they prepare for the release of The Rip, directed by Joe Carnahan and starring Steven Yeun and Kyle Chandler, it's clear that the true success of these two friends isn't measured in awards or box office numbers, but in a friendship that has proven unbreakable for more than four decades.
