J Balvin reflected on mental health: “We all go through things”
The Colombian artist said that celebrities often don't talk about mental health issues for fear of being stigmatized
J Balvin recently spoke about mental health and the emotional challenges he has faced, in a gesture that seeks to demystify the perception of perfection that often surrounds the lives of celebrities.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the Colombian singer reflected that although the lives of many celebrities seem perfect, it is not always the case.
“It may seem that our life is perfect, but that's not real. We're all human, we all go through things,” he said.
Balvin, 40, expressed how dealing with anxiety and depression can make a person feel alone or like a burden, although he emphasized that this is not the case.
The singer, who has suffered from anxiety and depression, shared some tips that have helped him deal with it and improve his mental health.
“Put down your phone, stay away from social media. They distort things a lot, they make you feel like everyone has everything figured out, and that can upset you. You start comparing and lose sight of your own path,” he indicated.
J Balvin highlighted the importance of focusing on authentic, everyday moments like a conversation with a loved one, spending time with friends, or small daily rituals.
The singer pointed out that celebrities often don't talk about mental health issues for fear of being stigmatized. “Being a celebrity made it almost harder to be honest about what I was going through.”
Balvin urged people not to stay silent and to seek help if they experience any problems. “Those who love you want to help you, so give them a chance,” he said.
The singer also stressed the importance of seeking professional help to better deal with the situation.
“Even before I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, everything was dark. I didn’t even know what was going through my head. Receiving that diagnosis was a relief because it gave me a name for what I was struggling with,” he said.
J Balvin also recommended staying active with some physical activity.“A big part of managing anxiety is understanding that mental and physical health go hand in hand. You really can't have one without the other. Being active is a great outlet for me; it helps me release a lot of the stress I carry around,” she said.
