Jim Carrey delivers an emotional speech in French upon receiving the Cesar Award
In the previous edition, Julia Roberts was the winner and also spoke French upon receiving the important award
Actor Jim Carrey became the star of the 51st Cesar Awards, held in Paris, as he received the honorary award that the French Film Academy bestows each year upon an international star. The gala, which brought together the cream of French cinema, experienced one of its most moving moments when the Canadian comedian took to the stage to deliver a speech entirely in French, demonstrating his love and respect for the culture of his host country. Carrey, known worldwide for films such as 'The Mask' and 'The Grinch,' followed in the footsteps of Julia Roberts, the previous year's winner. He was introduced by director Michel Gondry, who 22 years ago directed him in the acclaimed 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,' one of the films that solidified his career in dramatic roles. With his characteristic American accent, but with a notable effort to make himself understood, Carrey compared acting to sculpture: "As an actor, each character you play is like clay in the hands of the sculptor, which you mold according to the desire of your heart. How fortunate I have been to share this art with so many people who have truly opened their hearts to me." His connection to France: The most personal moment of the evening came when the actor revealed a surprising connection to France. “About 300 years ago, my great-great-grandfather, Marc-Francois Carre—yes, Carre—was born in France, in Saint-Malo,” he confessed, explaining that his ancestor later emigrated to Canada. Playing on the meaning of his surname in French (carre means 'square'), he added with emotion: “Tonight, with this magnificent honor, this square has come full circle.” Carrey didn't want to end his speech without thanking his loved ones, who were with him in the audience: his daughter Jane, his grandson Jackson, and his girlfriend, Mina, to whom he dedicated to tender “I love you.” However, the most heartfelt dedication was to his father, Percy Joseph Carrey: “Thanks to the funniest man I have ever known: my father, Percy Joseph Carrey, who taught me the value of love,"Generosity and laughter," he declared. To close with a flourish and a touch of humor, the actor asked the audience: "How's my French? Almost mediocre, right? Excuse me, I didn't speak French, but I'm just now learning. "My tongue is tired."
