Jimmy Kimmel and Disney sign extension to keep 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' until 2027

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel will remain at the helm of his late-night show on ABC until at least 2027, after signing a one-year contract extension with Disney. The agreement, confirmed by the host himself on social media, ensures the continuation of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” beyond what was initially planned, as his previous contract was set to expire in 2026. The renewal comes at a particular time for the late-night format, which faces challenges due to changing television viewing habits. While shows like “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS will end their traditional run in May of next year, Kimmel will remain one of the longest-running figures in the genre, hosting his show since January 2003. A Format in Transition: The late-night business is experiencing a decline in traditional viewership as viewers, especially younger ones, migrate to streaming platforms. Producers now pay as much attention to YouTube metrics as they do to traditional television ratings. While hosts like Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Stephen Colbert continue to generate headlines and viral content, they do so for smaller audiences. Even the programming has adjusted: none of the major late-night shows currently air on Fridays. Over more than two decades, Kimmel transformed his show from a space for his sometimes irreverent humor—in its early days, the studio audience was allowed to drink alcohol—into a platform that more frequently addresses current events and politics. The host, who began his career in radio before gaining prominence on Comedy Central, has distinguished himself from contemporaries like Fallon and Colbert—who hail from shows like “Saturday Night Live”—by maintaining an “everyman” image while occasionally clashing with detractors on social media.
