Selena Gomez expressed her pride in her Mexican roots in Rare Beauty campaign
Through her brand Rare Beauty, the artist celebrates the diversity of the Latin community with the launch of 48 shades of foundation
Selena Gomez continues to consolidate her role as an icon of empowerment and representation. The 33-year-old actress and businesswoman launched a new campaign for her brand, Rare Beauty, with which it seeks to pay tribute to the richness and complexity of its Mexican heritage, as well as the diversity of the entire Latin community.
The campaign, titled “True to Myself”, features 48 people from all Latin America, each representing one of the 48 shades of the new True to MyselfNatural Matte Longwear Foundation foundation.
“Seeing such a broad spectrum of skin tones and identities represented with such purpose is everything I dreamed of when I founded Rare Beauty,” Gomez said exclusively to People.
“It's not just about makeup. It's about that feeling of seeing yourself reflected in the media that we all consume,” he added.
For Gomez, whose paternal family emigrated from Monterrey to Texas in the 1970s, this project has a deeply personal background.
The campaign was captured by Chicano-Costa Rican director and photographer Brittany Bravo and was filmed in a Latino-owned studio. The artist highlighted that what she's most proud of her community is its “resilience and complexity.”
The protagonist of“Only Murders in the Building” confessed that, during her growth, she rarely saw herself reflected in traditional beauty campaigns. With this launch, she hopes that new generations don't feel the need to compare themselves with others.
“We were never destined to look or think the same. Our differences are what make us beautiful,” the businesswoman concluded, reaffirming that the Latinx identity is, in essence, a vibrant spectrum full of nuances.
