A few times, advocates of the Madras High Court have expressed displeasure over the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation to elevate Advocate Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri as a Judge of the Madras High Court. In this regard, a group of 21 advocates of Madras High Court has written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu. In this, these advocates have urged to withdraw the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium for elevation of Advocate Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri as a Judge of the Madras High Court.
What is written in the letter?
The letter written by the advocates of the Madras High Court states that the regressive views of Advocate Gauri are completely contrary to the basic constitutional values. His views reflect deep religious fanaticism. As such, he is ineligible to be appointed as a High Court judge.
Significantly, Advocate Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri describes herself on Twitter as the 'National General Secretary of BJP Mahila Morcha'. On January 17, a collegium headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud recommended Gauri's name along with four other advocates for judicial appointment.
More than four lakh cases are pending for more than 25 years - Law Minister
There are those which are pending for more than 25 years. According to him, the total number of such pending cases is 4,01,099.
The Law Minister informed that the number of cases pending for more than 25 years in the Supreme Court of India is 81 as per the data available from the Integrated Case Management Information System (ICMIS) till January 27, 2023. As per the data available on the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) as on 30 January 2023, the number of cases pending for more than 25 years in the High Court and District and Subordinate Courts are 1,24,810 and 2,76,208 respectively.
In reply, the Law Minister also pointed out that the problem of pendency of cases is a multi-dimensional problem. Which is increasing year by year with the increase in the country's population and increasing awareness among the public about their rights. Apart from this, the Kovid-19 pandemic during the year 2020 has also contributed significantly in increasing the pendency in the last three years.
