What happened on 4th May in Manipur?
The hill state of Manipur has been in the grip of caste violence for some time now, but now a video has surfaced in which women are being paraded naked. The incident took place at village B in Kangpokpi district, about 35 km from state capital Imphal. Happened in Phenom. According to the complaint lodged by the village head, on May 4 at around 3 pm, 900-1000 people belonging to various organizations came to B. Phenom forcefully entered the village. They had state-of-the-art weapons like AK rifles, SLR INSAS and 303 rifles. The violent mob ransacked all the houses and set ablaze all movable properties after looting furniture, electronic goods, utensils, clothes, grains including cash.
Rescued the villagers from the police by blocking the road
Apart from this, five villagers fled towards the forest to save their lives. They were later rescued by the Nonpak Sekmai police team and were on their way to the Nongpoh Sekmai police station. Meanwhile, they were stopped by a mob on the way and about two kilometers from Nongpok Sekmai police station and about three kilometers from 33 AR Somrei outpost, snatched them from the security of the police team. In addition, a 56-year-old man was killed on the spot.
Brother who came to save sister was also killed
Pradhan said that during this time three women were forced to take off their clothes by the mob and were stripped naked in front of the mob. In the video related to the incident, it can be clearly seen that the men are continuously molesting the helpless women, who are crying and pleading with them to leave. The brutality did not stop here, a 21-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped in broad daylight. When the 19-year-old younger brother tried to save his sister's dignity and life, he was killed on the spot by the mob. However, the victim managed to escape from the spot with the help of some people.
In which sections the case was registered against the accused in the incident?
The FIR was registered on June 21, more than a month after the incident. The case was registered under IPC sections 153A, 398, 427, 436, 448, 302, 354, 364, 326, 376 and 34 and Section 25(1c) of the Arms Act. In this FIR registered by the police, several allegations have been made against about 1,000 people involved in the crowd. These include promoting enmity between different groups, robbery with a deadly weapon, arson, house-trespass, kidnapping for murder, causing hurt, misdemeanor assault, causing grievous hurt and murder using a firearm with intent.
What action has been taken in this matter so far?
Zero FIR regarding this incident was registered at Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district. It was later referred to Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. Nearly a month after the case was registered, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said on Thursday that soon after the video surfaced, the state government took suo motu cognizance of the video and ordered an inquiry. He said that the Manipur Police took action and made the first arrest today. The main culprit was arrested in a police operation this morning. The accused has been identified as 32-year-old Huirem Herodas Meitei, a resident of Pechi Awang Leikai.
