Court bans barium nitrate
Sivakasi-based firecracker makers told news agency ANI that the production has come down drastically after the Supreme Court banned the use of the chemical barium nitrate. Because barium nitrate is a major substance for making firecrackers, which gives long shelf life to firecrackers. At the same time, Abiruban, owner of Ayyan Fireworks, told ANI, "The Supreme Court in its order has banned the manufacture of string crackers. String crackers are usually one of the most sold firecrackers in Sivakasi. He told that in Sivakasi around Rs. There are more than 1 thousand registered firecracker units, which provides employment to about 8 lakh people.
Environment Ministry suggested to the court
The Ministry of Environment, Forests and the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) have suggested to the Supreme Court that the ban on the use of barium nitrate and additives for the manufacture of fireworks be lifted. But the matter is still pending in the court. If firecracker manufacturers are to be believed, lakhs are being lost due to non-compliance of firecrackers decisions soon. At the same time, it had rained in Sivakasi for the last 10 days, due to which firecrackers could not be manufactured.
