Water Crisis Looms as Rivers Dry Up in Almora District, Uttarakhand
Almora district in Uttarakhand faces an impending water crisis as rivers dry up due to the prolonged absence of rain. The dwindling water levels at the Kosi Barrage raise concerns about future water supply.
The Almora district of Uttarakhand is facing a concerning situation as rivers are drying up due to the absence of rain for the past three months, signaling potential challenges for the future. The water supply to homes and businesses in Almora originates from the Kosi Barrage, which is now showing signs of depletion. Currently, the water level at the Kosi Barrage has plummeted to 23 cusecs from its previous level of 42 cusecs, raising alarms about an impending water crisis in the region.
The reliance on the Kosi Barrage for water supply underscores the severity of the situation, with approximately 16 MLD (Million Liters per Day) of water being provided to Almora daily. The gradual decline in water levels poses a threat to the sustainability of water resources in the area, necessitating urgent attention and action.
Local resident Giriraj Sah expressed concern over the dwindling water levels in the Kosi River, emphasizing the adverse implications for the future. Sah highlighted the broader impact of climate change, noting unusual weather patterns and their effect on water availability.
Despite the challenges, the resilience of the community is evident as residents adapt to the changing conditions by seeking alternative water sources such as streams and other natural reservoirs.
Mohan Singh Rawat, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, attributed the decline in water levels at the Kosi Barrage to the prolonged absence of rainfall. Rawat stressed the critical role of rain in replenishing water resources and expressed hope that forthcoming precipitation would alleviate the situation by replenishing the water levels at the Kosi Barrage.
As the region grapples with the repercussions of water scarcity, efforts to conserve water and mitigate the impact of climate change become increasingly imperative.
