The case of dragging the dead body of a minor girl on the road in Kaliaganj of North Dinajpur district of West Bengal has caught fire. Major action has been taken in the matter on Monday following fierce protests by the people affected by it. Four police officers of the rank of Assistant Sub Inspector of Police (ASI) were today suspended for allegedly dragging the body of a minor.

A senior police officer of West Bengal gave this information. He said that among the officers against whom action has been taken, three ASIs are posted at Kaliaganj police station and one at Raiganj police station.

Section 144 was imposed in the area on Sunday after it witnessed massive public protest on Saturday. On Sunday, a police officer had informed about tension and prohibitory orders in the area. He had informed that prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area as a precautionary measure under section 144 of CrPC. At present, the prohibitory orders have been imposed for a fortnight, but on the basis of review, its duration can also be extended. He told that as long as Section 144 is in force in the area, four or more people will not be allowed to assemble together. Strict action will be taken against those who violate it.

However, based on a complaint filed by the girl's mother, a case was registered under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. A team of officials led by Priyank Kanungo, chairman of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, met the family of the deceased on Sunday. The NCPCR has sought a report from the state DGP on the matter by Monday.

This incident is of last Friday i.e. 21 April. On that day, the minor girl, a resident of Kaliyaganj in Uttar Dinajpur, had left home in the evening to attend tuition. When she did not return home till late evening, the family members got scared. They started searching the surrounding areas. After a long delay, he also lodged a missing complaint at the nearby police station. The police found the girl's body in a canal on the second day of her disappearance. After this, the police dragged the body of the minor, after the video of which went viral, people took to the streets on Friday and on Saturday morning also, the local people took to the streets. The police baton-charged the protesters and fired tear gas shells. Locals pelted stones at the police demanding the arrest of the criminals. Not only this, the protesting locals blocked the road by burning tyres, and set several shops on fire.
