US citizen wanted in Florida for fentanyl trafficking captured in Sonora
The detainee had an arrest warrant issued on September 13, 2023 by the Court of the Southern District of Florida
State and federal authorities arrested in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora, an American citizen who was wanted by the United States justice system for alleged crimes related to fentanyl trafficking.
The State Attorney General's Office (FGJE) of Sonora reported that the detainee, identified only as Steven “N”, had an arrest warrant issued on September 13, 2023 by the Court of the Southern District of Florida, where he faces charges of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl.
The capture was the result of a coordinated operation between Mexican and US security agencies, according to media such as the newspaper El Universal.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the detainee was handed over to personnel from the National Immigration Institute for the corresponding administrative procedure and was subsequently placed at the disposal of U.S. agents. Marshals Service for his transfer to the United States, where he must face the judicial process against him.
The authorities indicated that this action is part of the binational cooperation mechanisms to locate and detain people required by justice in both countries, especially in cases related to organized crime and synthetic drug trafficking.
The Sonora Prosecutor's Office highlighted that it will continue to strengthen coordination with national and international bodies to combat impunity and comply with arrest warrants with international scope.
This is not the first time that an operation of this type has been carried out in the state of Sonora.
In September 2025, another man of American nationality identified as Omar “N”, originally from Indio, California, was detained and deported by Mexican authorities after being located in Sonora, a border city, where he was wanted for the crime of fentanyl trafficking.
The capture was carried out at the international checkpoint of San Luis Río Colorado, derived from the exchange of information with United States agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service and the Border Patrol, which confirmed the existence of an arrest warrant against him since December 13, 2022 in San Diego, California.
