Coffee: an ally against liver diseases

A new study reveals that daily coffee consumption, even in large quantities, can significantly reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Over more than a decade and with the participation of more than 354,000 people, the research observed a decreased risk of liver disease, highlighting the importance of the antioxidant effect of coffee.
“This is probably the most comprehensive long-term follow-up data on the impact of coffee,” said Dr. Hyunseok Kim, first author of the study and a transplant hepatologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.
"We observed that the liver benefit of coffee is probably not due to caffeine, since we see a similar benefit in those who consume decaffeinated coffee. Therefore, it seems to be more related to the antioxidant effect of coffee," CNN reported their statements.
Significant Study Results
Risk reduction. Drinking one to two cups daily was associated with a 20% lower risk of cirrhosis and a 24% lower risk of liver cancer.
High consumption. Drinking five or more cups daily showed a 32% reduction in the risk of cirrhosis and a 47% reduction in liver cancer.
Implications of sweeteners. Using sugar or substitutes to sweeten coffee was associated with slightly less favorable outcomes in terms of liver health.
Considerations about coffee intake
Health recommendations. The American Heart Association suggests limiting added sugars, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets a limit for caffeine.
Conscious consumption. It is advisable to avoid coffee in the hours before sleep to minimize interference with rest.
Despite the positive results, the study has limitations, such as bias in the sample and the follow-up period of coffee consumption. It is recommended to conduct more studies in diverse populations to verify the universality of the observed benefits.
Benefits of coffee for other diseases
In addition to liver effects, moderate coffee consumption has been associated with lower risk of several diseases and conditions, although the evidence varies by condition and does not confirm causality in all cases.
Consuming coffee in moderation (often cited: 3–4 cups/day) is often associated with benefits in several studies, but should not be considered a treatment; Consult your doctor if you have specific conditions, pregnancy, or sleep/anxiety problems.
