Nancy Pelosi backs one of her Hong Kong-born colleagues to replace her in Congress
Nancy Pelosi leaned toward Connie Chan who aspires to take her place after November when she ends a 38-year career in politics
Democrat Nancy Pelosi has chosen Connie Chan, one of her colleagues born in Hong Kong, to fill her position in California's 11th congressional district once she retires.
In early November of last year, the former speaker of the House of Representatives announced that after 37 years she would not seek re-election in Congress.
"There has been no greater honor for me than to stand on the House floor and say, 'I speak for the people of San Francisco.' I have truly loved serving as their voice in Congress, and I have always honored San Francisco's song, 'Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,' the anthem of our city. That is why I want you, my fellow San Francisco residents, to be the first to know. I will not seek re-election to Congress," he said in a video posted on the platform. X, formerly known as Twitter.
From that moment on, the question arose as to who would be in charge of receiving her support to replace her, since the political power she holds is extremely high, largely because until today she has been the first and only woman to have served as president of the United States House of Representatives.
So, following the same route, through another video now shared on Instagram, the Democrat originally from Baltimore was inclined to support Connie Chan, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, as her possible successor to represent said city in the lower house.
"I know and love this district. I know Congress and I know Connie. I am proud to endorse Democrat Connie Chan and I ask you to join me in electing her to Congress. Thank you," he mentioned.
In response, the woman who lived in Taiwan for a few years before arriving in the United States recalled the odyssey she experienced until entering the political arena after several years.
“I remember seeing San Francisco for the first time when I was 13. I didn't speak a word of English, but I had heard that it was a sanctuary city where anything was possible.
Receiving the support of the Speaker Emeritus of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to succeed her in Congress confirms to me that this is true. That is San Francisco and that is the city we fought for,” the 47-year-old Democrat mentioned in another video posted on her campaign website and social media.
