The Mexican president assured that Mexico's relationship with the US is based on respect for sovereignty, dialogue, and collaboration
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reaffirmed Mexico's position of rejecting intervention in the internal affairs of other countries, after the United States arrested Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Venezuela.
“Mexico reaffirms a principle that is not new and admits no ambiguity: we categorically reject intervention in the internal affairs of other countries," she said. "For Mexico, and so it must be for all Mexicans, the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples are neither optional nor negotiable; they are fundamental principles of international law and must always be respected without exception,” she maintained. In her morning press conference, the Mexican president affirmed that Mexico's position is enshrined in its Constitution, the Charter of the United Nations, and International Law. “Our position is clearly enshrined in our Constitution of the United Mexican States, but it is not only a national principle. The Charter of the United Nations and International Law unequivocally establish respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination," she asserted. From the National Palace, the head of the Mexican executive branch stated that "only the people can build their own future, decide its path, to exercise sovereignty over its natural resources and freely define its form of government," and warned that "unilateral action and invasion cannot be the basis of international relations in the 21st century." “Global economic competition, particularly in the face of Asia's growth, is not established through the use of force to subjugate other peoples, but through cooperation for development, productive investment, innovation, education, and social welfare,” she argued. Regarding Mexico's bilateral relationship with the United States, Sheinbaum Pardo asserted that her country established an understanding based on four principles: Respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, shared and differentiated responsibility, mutual respect and trust, and cooperation without subordination.
It was on January 3 that the United States government carried out a military operation in Caracas, Venezuela, to capture and bring to trial Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, for drug trafficking.
