Trump launches last warning to Hamas to reach deal and free hostages

Donald Trump issued a “final warning” to Hamas, saying the Palestinian militant group must accept a deal to free the hostages in Gaza.

“The Israelis have agreed to my terms. It is time for Hamas to agree to them as well. I have warned Hamas of the consequences of not agreeing to them. This is my final warning,” Trump said on social media, without elaborating.

“Everyone wants the hostages home. Everyone wants this war to end! The Israelis have agreed to my terms. It is time for Hamas to agree to them as well,” the president wrote on his Truth Social account.

In a statement released shortly after, Hamas said it was willing to “immediately come to the negotiating table” after what it described as “some ideas from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement.”

Trump’s post comes moments after it was reported that the US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff last week sent a new proposal to Hamas for a deal on the Gaza hostages and a ceasefire via an Israeli peace activist, according to Axios.

Back in early March, Trump issued a similar ultimatum to Hamas, demanding that it immediately release all remaining hostages and hand over the bodies of any dead hostages, saying otherwise, “it’s over for you.”

The Israeli campaign group Hostages and Missing Families Forum hailed the US president’s latest intervention as a “real breakthrough.”

Hamas militants captured 251 hostages during the massive October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, and 47 are believed to still be in Gaza.

The Israeli military says 25 of them have died. Israel demands the return of his remains.
