What do the results in the primary elections in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan mean for Trump?
The results in Indiana and Ohio show that Trump's support still has weight in certain districts and states
The primary elections held this May 5 in the United States made clear that President Donald Trump maintains a strong influence on the Republican Party, especially in key states such as Indiana and Ohio.
In these territories several candidates backed by the president achieved important victories on the way to the legislative elections in november.
In Indiana, the state Senate primary became a direct test of Trump's political power within his party, as at five of the seven candidates supported by the president they defeated republican legislators in offices who had rejected a plan promoted by Trump to redraw the electoral districts of the state.
Among the winners backed by Trump standouts Blake Fiechter, who defeated the veteran senator Travis Holdman; Trevor De Vries, who overcame widely nte Dan Dernulc; as well as Tracey Powell, Brian Schmutzler and Michelle Davis, all aligned with the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) agenda.
The day represented a blow to the more moderate wing of the Republican Party in Indiana and, in fact, President Trump has publicly criticized the legislators who blocked They championed the electoral redistribution promoted by the White House, arguing that the new map would have helped Republicans win more seats in the House of Representatives.
Indiana's Republican governor, Mike Braun, celebrated the results and called the night a “big victory” for conservatives aligned with Trump.
Vivek Ramaswamy advances
In Ohio, tech entrepreneur and Trump ally Vivek Ramaswamy won the Republican primary for governor. Ramaswamy, considered one of Trump's closest allies within the new Republican generation, he obtained the backing of the president and vice-president JD Vance.
Ramaswamy will face Democrat Amy Acton, former public health director of Ohio,in November. Analysts consider that the victory of the businessman reflects the consolidation of Trumpism in one of the most important states in the American industrial belt.
Also in Ohio, Republican Jon Husted has secured the Republican nomination for a key Federal Senate race. Husted is seen as a Republican closer to Trump and will face Democrat Sherrod Brown in one of the most watched elections in the country.
Democrats win in Michigan
In Michigan, Democrats managed to maintain control of the state Senate after a special election won by Democratic candidate Chedrick Green. Although the co ntienda had less national attention, the result was considered important for the balance of power in a competitive state heading to the midterm elections.
The May 5 primaries occurred in the amid of an intense national debate on electoral redistribution, minority rights and political control of Congress.
For Trump, however, the results represent a sign that he continues to be the dominant figure within the Republican Party, even when he faces criticism over economic and foreign policy issues.
At the end of May there are other primary elections where the political power of the president can be seen, with processes in Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky and Louisiana.
