Zohran Mamdani confirms contact with the White House for his possible meeting with Trump
Mayor-elect Mamdani prepares for crucial meeting with President Trump after a contentious election campaign
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani confirmed Monday that his transition team has contacted President Donald Trump's staff to arrange a meeting in the coming weeks.
This signals what could be the first step toward easing tensions between the two leaders ahead of the inauguration Mamdani's inauguration on January 1.
Mamdani, according to The New York Post, stated during an event in the Bronx that his intention to meet with Trump stems from a commitment he made to voters.
He also emphasized that he is willing to talk “with anyone, as long as it is for the good of the eight and a half million people who call this city home.”
This rapprochement comes after months of public clashes; However, once the election was over, Trump adopted a noticeably more conciliatory tone on Sunday night, despite his previous threats to withhold federal funds from New York City.
Trump, who for months ridiculed the Democratic socialist, calling him “my little communist” and predicting the “ruin” of New York if he were elected, changed his tune this weekend.
“We will find a solution,” Trump said, adding that he wanted “everything to work out well for New York.”
During a volunteer event at the Part of the Solution food bank in the Bronx, Mamdani stated that any meeting with the president would focus on affordability and food insecurity, issues he has repeatedly described as critical to his next administration.
“I will go and make my case to the president, to whoever, frankly,” Mamdani said. “This is the kind of thing we need to change if we want to make it easier for New Yorkers and Americans to afford basic day-to-day necessities.”
Kathy Hochul Welcomed the Outreach
Governor Kathy Hochul welcomed the outreach, calling it “a very good thing.” In statements also reported by the New York media outlet, he maintained that keeping a line of communication open with the White House could be beneficial for the city. “The president, in essence, is a New Yorker,” Hochul commented. He also emphasized that this connection has been useful in his own exchanges with the Republican administration. If it takes place, the meeting would mark the first direct contact between Trump and Mamdani, who will assume the Mayoralty of New York on January 1.
