The fervor of Chhath festival has begun to spread as Chaiti Chhath approaches, scheduled to commence on April 12th. Devotees are gearing up for the rituals associated with this auspicious occasion. April 12th marks the consumption of pumpkin rice, followed by rice on the 13th, with Kharna holding special significance during this festival. Referred to as Mahaprasad, Kharna entails various worship rituals.
Pandit Gulshan Jha, in a conversation with Local 18, shed light on the importance of Kharna, describing it as a form of Mahaprasad. On this day, fasting individuals partake in a variety of fruits, along with Kheer and Puri, distributing Prasad to all household members. The occasion symbolizes Mahaprasad, emphasizing purity and sanctity in its observance.
Jha elaborated that devotees adorn themselves in new attire and utilize fresh ingredients for preparing Prasad. The room where the Prasad is consumed must remain immaculate, with no stitched garments present. The fasting regimen during this festival is rigorous, involving abstention from water consumption until the evening, followed by two consecutive days of waterless fasting.
During the festival, fasting women sleep on the ground, ensuring no fabric with binding touches the surface beneath them. The celebration of Chhath is deeply rooted in purity and reverence, earning it the moniker of the festival of nature. All fruits offered to Mother Chhathi are seasonal, aligning with the essence of the festival.
Recognized as Bihar’s most significant festival, Chhath sees individuals from far and wide returning to their homes to partake in the festivities, embodying the spirit of tradition and cultural heritage.
