Game 7 between the Thunder and the Pacers, the most-watched NBA Finals game in six years
Haliburton’s injury overshadowed a historic night for Oklahoma City
The seventh and final game of the NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers became a ratings phenomenon. According to figures published by ESPN PR, more than 16.4 million people tuned in to Sunday's broadcast, making it the most-watched Finals game since 2018. The duel promised excitement after a very even series, with constant exchanges of dominance between both teams. However, the expectation was dashed by an unexpected injury: Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton left the game in the first quarter with an Achilles tendon injury. His departure completely changed the dynamics of the game. Despite the tough blow to Indiana, the spectacle did not lose its momentum entirely. The Thunder, led by a brilliant Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, sealed the championship with a 103-91 victory. 'SGA' put in another stellar performance and was named Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP), capping a dream season both individually and collectively.
Massive Viewership and Signs of a Dynasty
The 16,353,000 viewers who tuned in for Game 7 reflect the huge interest in a Finals that, despite being hosted by two markets considered small, generated a huge media impact. The narrative of a young, athletic, and defensively solid Thunder resonated with an audience that could have witnessed the birth of a new power in the league.
With 68 regular-season wins and a roster led by emerging talents like SGA, Chet Holmgren, and Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City not only lifted the trophy, but sent a clear message: this team is here to stay.
However, the game left a bittersweet taste. Many fans couldn't help but wonder how the outcome would have changed if Haliburton, a key contributor to Indiana's offense, had been able to play the full 48 minutes.
