IndyCar: Pato oward makes a comeback in mid Ohio, but falls short of the podium
The Mexican driver could not repeat last year victory in the IndyCar race
New Zealand driver Scott Dixon, of Chip Ganassi, won this Sunday at Mid-Ohio, the tenth IndyCar race that was dominated by Spaniard Alex Palou, also of Chip Ganassi, but in which an error with six laps to go cost him the victory.
Dixon He took advantage of Palou's mistake on a corner to overtake him, taking the win and giving the Iberian a second place that does not overshadow an impressive and overwhelming season in IndyCar.
The podium was completed by the Dane Christian Lundgaard (Arrow McLaren) while the Mexican Pato O'Ward (Arrow McLaren) finished in fifth place.
The Monterrey native managed to come back in the race, since he started from 14th place and reached fourth, but in the end he ended up yielding to Lundgaard and could not achieve his goal of repeating last year's triumph on the same track.
With this result, O'Ward added his seventh Top 5 of the season.
“I knew I had a missile to fight against. I made my strategy work. I fought with all my strength from 15th place to 5th,” Pato shared on his social networks.
The one who wasn't satisfied with his result was Palou, who had achieved pole position on Saturday and who has been magnificent and practically perfect throughout the season, so much so that he has accumulated six wins in ten 2025 IndyCar races.
In addition, Palou, defending champion and winner of the IndyCar championship in three of the last four years, became the first Spaniard to win the Indianapolis 500 in May.
“I don't know, it was just a stupid mistake on my part, honestly. The car was incredible all weekend. But I lost control of the car a little bit there. There's no one to blame but myself,” he said this Sunday in statements to the Fox broadcast after the Mid-Ohio race.
“It hurts a lot, obviously. Despite that, it was a good day, but it hurts to lose like that. It was a very, very big mistake,” acknowledged.
Despite the disappointment in the outcome of this test, Palou leads the overall standings by a wide margin with just seven races left in the season.
The Catalan has 430 points and in second place is American Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti), who has 317 after only managing to manage eighth place on Sunday.
Third overall is O'Ward with 305 points while Dixon is fourth with 282.
Two of the seven remaining races in the 2025 IndyCar series will be held next weekend, with the two races at Iowa Speedway on Saturday and Sunday.
