Mexicans will start as substitutes in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game
Four Mexican-born players make history in the Midseason Classic, although without a presence in the starting lineup
For the first time in the history of the Major Leagues, four players born in Mexico were called up to the All-Star Game. However, none of them will be in the starting lineup when the American League and National League face off this Tuesday, July 16 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
Managers Dave Roberts (National League) and Aaron Boone (American League) revealed their starting lineups for the 2025 All-Star Game on Monday. Although the number of Mexicans called up is a record, neither Alejandro Kirk, Jonathan Aranda, Andrés Muñoz, nor Isaac Paredes (who ultimately will not participate) are among the starters.
A historic participation, although from the bench
Alejandro Kirk (Blue Jays) and Jonathan Aranda (Rays) are listed as reserves on the American League roster. Andrés Muñoz (Mariners), meanwhile, will be available as a reliever. Isaac Paredes had been called up as a replacement for Dominican José Ramírez, but announced his withdrawal on Sunday for family reasons. His return to the Astros is expected to follow the All-Star break.
Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal will start for the Junior National League, while rookie sensation Paul Skenes (Pirates) will do so for the National League.
Rodrigo Fernandez, director of MLB Mexico, highlighted the importance of this participation in an interview with Diario AS: “It undoubtedly has a significant impact on the fans in Mexico. Regardless of whether you support the Yankees or the Dodgers, you are aware of (Jonathan) Aranda, (Isaac) Paredes, (Randy) Arozarena, and that is a very positive thing.”
Although not all of them were born in Mexico, Arozarena — born in Cuba and naturalized Mexican — was also called up thanks to a standout week in which he hit three home runs. Their inclusion brings even more attention from the Mexican public to the event. For Fernandez, the ideal scenario would be for the American League to win on Tuesday: "I hope the American League wins because all the Mexicans are there."
