The 31-year-old Portuguese player remains under contract with the Red Devils until 2027, with the option for an additional season. However, his continued contract is not guaranteed. In an interview with the British broadcaster BBC, Fernandes spoke candidly about his situation: "As I've always said, I feel good here and I want to achieve my dreams here."
Despite his words, the player himself admitted that there is no formal agreement with the club regarding a renewal or departure. "I can't speak for the club and I've read people saying I have an agreement with the club for next year, but if the club has reached that agreement, it hasn't been with me. I haven't spoken to anyone."
Rumors, clauses, and temptations from Saudi Arabia
Bruno Fernandes also clarified that he won't allow negotiations until after the next FIFA World Cup. "My agent knows how I work. If he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Until then, I don't talk to anyone," he concluded.
The Portuguese player's contract includes a €65 million exit clause for clubs outside the Premier League. This condition has sparked interest from Arab clubs, such as Al Hilal, who already presented him with a significant financial offer last summer. However, Fernandes opted to stay in Manchester in order to help the team overcome one of its worst seasons in decades, after finishing in fifteenth place and missing out on all European competition.
Possible clash against Mexico at the Azteca
Amid uncertainty over his future,The Portuguese could visit Mexico before the World Cup. Mikel Arriola, commissioner of the Mexican Football Federation, confirmed that the Portuguese national team will face El Tri on March 28, at the reopening of the Azteca Stadium.
“We know that Portugal is finishing its qualification; technical details are still pending, but yes. Everything is almost finalized for Portugal to be part of the match for the reopening of the Azteca Stadium,” stated Arriola, who also added that Cristiano Ronaldo will be part of the match “if he is physically fit.”
The official also explained that coach Javier “el Vasco” Aguirre is preparing for high-level matches in adverse conditions before the tournament. Mexico is coming off a 4-0 loss to Colombia and a 1-1 draw with Ecuador, results that generated criticism, but Arriola defended the coaching staff: "In first conclusion, I say there is a group. Second, there is a plan. And third, there is a leader named Javier Aguirre."
