Clippers send James Harden to Cleveland and receive Garland
James Harden joins Donovan Mitchell in the Eastern Conference
The Clippers made a high-impact move in the NBA market by agreeing to trade James Harden to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for point guard Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick. The trade was revealed Tuesday by ESPN and marks a significant shift for both franchises mid-season. According to available information, Harden and the Clippers' management worked on his departure in recent days, allowing them to reach an agreement that addresses the needs of both sides. For Cleveland, Harden's arrival represents an immediate push to compete, while Los Angeles adds a younger player with room for growth and a long-term contract. Harden, 36, had been absent from the team in recent games. The shooting guard did not participate in Sunday's victory against Phoenix or Monday's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers for personal reasons. Coach Tyronn Lue explained before that last game that the player was at his home in Phoenix. In his 17th season in the league, Harden continues to be one of the NBA's leading offensive playmakers. He's averaging 25.4 points and 8.1 assists per game, numbers that represent his best scoring production since his last full season with Houston. His performance was key to the Clippers' recovery, who managed to right the ship after a difficult start with a 6-21 record.
A trade with immediate and future impact
The Clippers had acquired Harden in 2013 from Philadelphia, and with him they reached the playoffs twice in a row, although they were eliminated in the first round both times. Last summer, the player signed a two-year, $81.5 million contract, which includes a $42 million player option for next season. Despite not winning the coveted ring, Harden has shown remarkable durability, playing over 70 games in each of the last two seasons.
On the other side of the trade is Darius Garland,The 26-year-old point guard is currently sidelined with a right foot injury and hasn't played since January 14. This season, Garland is averaging 18.0 points and 6.9 assists in 26 games, although he has been limited by recurring toe problems. Drafted in 2019, Garland was a key piece in Cleveland's rebuilding process after LeBron James' departure. His best season came last year when he averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists, shooting 40% from three-point range, earning All-Star honors, and helping the Cavaliers achieve 64 wins and the league's best offense. He is currently in the middle of a five-year extension signed in 2022, with two seasons remaining and nearly $90 million still owed.
Kawhi Leonard, Last-Minute All-Star
Amidst the movement, the NBA also announced the inclusion of Kawhi Leonard in the All-Star Game. The decision is due to adjustments in the event's new format, which pits the United States against the rest of the world. Karl-Anthony Towns' choice to represent the Dominican Republic necessitated adding Leonard to fill the 16 slots for American players.
With this, the Clippers will have representation in the All-Star Game, which will be played at the Intuit Dome, their new home. Additionally, Yanic Konan Niederhauser will participate in the Rising Stars Game, completing a significant weekend for the Los Angeles franchise.
