Father of David Benavides Speaks on Possible Fight with Crawford
Jose Benavides Sr. said it's best not to get his hopes up because Crawford's team doesn't want the fight and said his son can weigh 168 pounds
Jose Benavides Sr., father and trainer of David Benavides, said they are open to a possible fight with Terence Crawford at super middleweight, but for the moment they are focused on the duel against Anthony Yarde.
In an interview with Izquierdazo, Benavidez Sr. commented that it is best not to get our hopes up because Crawford's team does not want the fight and assured that the Mexican Monster has no problem making the 168 pounds.
“Why should we get our hopes up, when we also have a commitment already on the way? So it is better to win this fight first (with Anthony Yarde) and not get ahead of ourselves or not think about any of that at this time. We are focused on this fight, God willing everything goes well, that there are no cuts or injuries, and at the end of the day we want to give the people what they want to see. And if they want to see a fight against Terence Crawford, let's first attend to this commitment we have on the 22nd, look spectacular and from there we will see,” he said.
“(…) David never had any problems making the 168. First of all, at this moment I think BoMac was asked if he wanted the fight with Benavidez and "He said no, not at all. So I'd rather see how this fight plays out and then see what Turki says. We're very happy with PBC, with Turki for the opportunity, but I think anything is possible. Like I said, it's a great fight, it's a fight where David would be super big for Crawford and I think things would be very different (from what we saw with Canelo)," he added.
Let's remember that after Terence Crawford's historic victory over Canelo Alvarez - which crowned him undisputed champion at 168 pounds - Turki Alalshikh asked if David Benavidez could drop down to super middleweight, hinting at a possible fight with Bud.
Shortly after, Bian 'BoMac' McIntyre, Crawford's trainer, declared that they are not interested in facing Benavidez. It is currently unknown what the American's next step will be, but what he did make clear is that he will continue competing at 168 pounds.
Instead,The Mexican Monster will defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) 175-pound title against Anthony Yarde on November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and could then face Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol.
David Benavidez, 29, won the WBA regular 175-pound belt from David Morrell after defeating him on the judges' scorecards and became WBC champion after Dmitry Bivol's resignation. The Mexican Monster has a record of 30 wins, 24 of them by fast track, and no losses in his professional career.
Meanwhile, Terence Crawford, 37, became the undisputed champion of three different divisions by defeating the Mexican and made boxing history. The American remains undefeated and now has 42 wins, 31 of them by knockout.
