Fdel Kuri, former owner of Veracruz, predicts a catastrophe for Emilio Azcárraga Jean
Emilio Azcárraga Jean will have to face the effects of bringing the World Cup to Mexico and the former owner of Veracruz predicts many complications for him
The controversial former owner of Veracruz, Fidel Kuri Grajales, predicted that the owner of Televisa and América, Emilio Azcárraga Jean, will have to face the serious problems of bringing the 2026 World Cup to Mexico, especially due to the excessive expenses he had to make.
In an interview for ESPN, the aforementioned businessman explained without hesitation that Azcárraga Jean made a great effort to get 12 games for Mexico in a World Cup where the weight of the organization fell on the United States and that this human effort, but above all economic, could generate a catastrophe for the Televisa company and especially for America.
"Of course it is exciting that a World Cup is being held in Mexico for the third time, but the cost-benefit of bringing an event of this magnitude had to be calculated. Because he had to invest in the remodeling of the stadium with all the problems it represents, the delay of the architects, the cost overrun, so they were expenses that he assumed alone," said the businessman.
Kuri Grajales, who had to spend time in jail for daring to challenge the assembly of soccer owners in Mexico, said that it is the worst time he has seen in Mexican soccer: "They bring chaos inside, the betrayals continue, the low blows continue, there is no unity, there is no morality to be able to carry out growth."
"There is the investment fund, some accepted, others did not, so in the end they will leave Azcárraga Jean alone and let him scratch his nails alone. We have to wait for the World Cup to end, where I want the team to do well, but where they should look is at the impact of renovating a stadium like the Azteca. If it was fair that for eight games an expense had to be made that could impact Emilio's finances."
"Without wanting to be a bird of bad omen, he stated that a catastrophe could even be generated for the finances of Emilio Azcárraga's company and this will impact America to be able to have a well-armed team, with quality players; then, I insist, it will have been a good decision to host the World Cup; time will tell," he said.
Finally, he explained that he will continue fighting to return Veracruz to Liga MX, since in the end they could not prove to him that he had done some type of illegal business during his time in football. “I still remember the words of Enrique Bonilla, who was president of the First Division: ‘’Don’t make the powerful angry.”
