Epic Games just released the Fortnite v40.40 update, and Zero Build mode players are facing the-biggest overhaul of their gameplay since the mo did arrive in 2022. The changes are deep, experimental and arrive accompanied by one of the most anticipated crossovers of the year ? Overwatch officially enters the island.

The changes that transform combat into Zero Construction

The most talked about adjustment is the removal of lethal fall damage. If you fall from a height that previously would have eliminated you, you now land with a splat animation, and are left with just 1 HP and you lose all your shields. It's brutal, yes, but it gives you one last chance to survive. This mechanic only applies in unranked games, so competitive play is unaffected. 

There's another change that modifies the team dynamics significantly: eliminations now automatically restore the player's shield. What this means is playing of Aggressive form no longer leaves you exposed,but rather rewards you. If you eliminate one by one, you come to each next fight with a defensive advantage. It's a design twist that favors the offensive style. 

Infinite sprint, mobility and pocket items

Mobility also gets a considerable boost. Holding the pickaxe grants unlimited sprint, which completely changes the way you cross the island and escape or chase rivals. You no longer have to ration stamina in the early stages. 

The “pocket items” system replaces the construction button with items for unlimited use and recharge time. At the start of each game you receive one random from these three: 

Parachute redeployment also returns permanently in Zero Build, and environmental structures now withstand more damage from weapons, incentivizing using them as actual tactical cover. 

Fortnite x Overwatch arrives on the island today

The overwatch crossover isn't a simple skins pack — it's an event that transforms the map and gameplay. Epic Games and Blizzard team to mark the 10th anniversary of Overwatch with four iconic heroes landing in Fortnite: Tracer, D.Va, Genji and Mercy, all part of the 2016 original cast. 

The map receives points of interest inspired by the most famous scenarios of Blizzard's shooter: 

As for weapons and cosmetics, Tracer's Pulse Pistols and Mercy's Caduceus Staff arrive as functional in-game items. The skins will be available in the store today. same with LEGO styles included, and there's a bundle of the Porsche Cayenne EV with Overwatch-themed decals for those who want to take the crossover to the victory screen. 

What are pocket items in Fortnite Zero Build? They are unlimited-use items with reload time that occupy the build button on the m odo Zero Construction. They are obtained at the start of each game and can be shockwave grenades, medical fog grenades or shield bubbles. 

Which Overwatch characters arrived in Fortnite?Four heroes from the original Overwatch 2016 cast arrive as skins: Tracer, D.Va, Genji and Mercy. Each has their own cosmetics pack with matching accessories and LEGO styles available today in the in-game store. 

Does fall damage go away completely in Fortnite Zero Build? It doesn't go away at all. A lethal fall now leaves you with 1 HP and no shields instead of eliminating you, but only in unranked games. Ranked mode keeps the original rules.
